Sir Walter Scott
 (15 August 1771 – 21 September 1832), was a Scottish novelist, poet, playwright and historian.

Sir Walter Scott bought Cartley Hole Farm, downstream on the Tweed nearer Melrose. The farm had the nickname of "Clarty Hole", and Scott renamed it "Abbotsford" after a neighboring ford used by the monks of Melrose Abbey.
